Akash is an all-weather medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system indigenously developed in India as part of the Integrated Guided-Missile Development Program (IGMDP). It provides multi-directional and multi-target area defence. The Akash missile can be launched from static or mobile platforms, such as battle tanks and wheeled vehicles, providing deployment flexibility. The SAM system can handle multiple targets and destroy maneuvering targets such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), fighter aircraft, cruise missiles and missiles launched from helicopters. The Akash SAM system defends vulnerable areas against medium-range air threats from low, medium and high altitudes.
L&T has also developed the integrated propulsion air frames, 3D central acquisition radar and energy system
In partnership with DRDO, L&T has realized this mobile launcher system capable of providing tactical land based air defence and selective stationary / mobile assets.
This all-electric MRSAM mobile launcher is designed for launching eight canisterised missiles in vertical mode. It is fitted with electro-mechanical outriggers with an auto-levelling feature to stabilize the launcher during launch. The electronics of the launcher have been designed using VME based MIL grade electronics and provide multiple power sources with a 15-minute battery back-up.
